Watson Art + Photography is an ongoing series of digital photography focusing on abstract composition. Watson's work began with painting and mixed media and now includes abstract expressionist photography. The images he produces using the camera originally served as inspirations for his painting then evolved to become an artistic entity themselves. Specifically, they consist of views of urban and industrial images found throughout the Greater Toronto Area which are then manipulated to resemble paintings. Investigating forgotten locations and surfaces that are often considered blemishes or simply disregarded altogether, this series recontextualizes the post-industrial underside of Toronto and its surrounding areas. This project aims to extract the raw, tarnished appearance of a major North American city and transform it into art before gentrification sweeps through it entirely.
Past experimental photographers such as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Aaron Siskind are a significant influence on his work, however, their approach is used as a starting point before generative art techniques are applied via the digital post-production tools available in the 21st century.
